The Abbey – 8 miles

Britain’s largest monastic ruin, was founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks seeking a simpler life. They later became Cistercian monks.

NYMR

NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY- 40 miles

provides some 18 miles of preserved steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors. The NYMR has featured in several feature length films over the years including, Brideshead Revisited and All Creatures Great and Small. More recently Pickering Station was dressed for Possession starring Gwynneth Paltrow. For the first film based on J K Rowling’s series, ‘Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone’. Goathland Station was turned into “Hogsmeade”

DRUIDS TEMPLE

The temple was constructed in about 1820, at the height of the folly craze. William Danby, the master of Swinton Hall, had his men build thetemple because he thought that they didn’t have enough work to do.There are a number of pathswithin the forest in which the temple lies and also a viewing area over Leighton Reservoir.
